A preview of ‘Feeling Her Way’

This Lacuna event was special, creative, and eye-opening.

We were treated to an exclusive preview of Sonia Boyce’s new exhibition: “Feeling Her way”, which has been installed at the Turner Contemporary. Sonia made her way down from London to give a talk about the installation, which features a mix of sculpture, sound, visuals, and collage. The work centres around the vocal experimentation of five Black female musicians, and celebrates female creativity and collaboration.

Lacuna attendees were able to experience the exhibition before the official opening on 4th Feb, as well as a sneak peek of “Banned.” by Sabina Desir in the Clore Learning Studio. Sabina’s project documents the lives of US Air Force servicemen and servicewomen who were Black, Indigenous, and from other ethnic groups, stationed at RAF Manston between 1951 and 1958.

Alongside the preview, educators and artists were able to take part in a creative engagement activity led by Turner Contemporary in the Clore Studio to provide some inspiration for their own practices.

Thank you to everyone who attended, and we hope to see you all at the next Lacuna event. Please visit the exhibitions in the meantime to learn more about the history and creativity that we sampled during the Lacuna preview.

Lacuna

Lacuna is developed and led by 3 Margate based arts and learning organisations: Arts Education Exchange, Open School East and Turner Contemporary.

The network is aimed at teachers and educators across the region to share and develop their knowledge and approach to creative learning. Underpinned by creativity, curiosity and critical thinking and making use of the cultural context of Thanet. We aim to invite an open dialogue across sectors and communities, building on the area's rich tapestry of history and innovation to nurture a culture of learning. With our joined up expertise, knowledge and resources in social practice, education and access we want to open up opportunity, discourse and practice.
